Hoagland - Hogeland

THE HOAGLANDS: FROM AMSTERDAM TO THE NEW WORLD

The Hoagland (Hoogland, Hoogelandt, Hooglant, Hoogelande, Hoochlandt, Hoochland, Hooglante, Hogland, Hoglin) name probably originates from the name of a locality in Holland or Prussia. Haagelant, a district of Brabant, Holland, is derived from the Dutch word haage meaning a hedge or thicket. A family of viscounts and governors has been recorded in that area. Hocherland (Oberland) was a district of ducal Prussia translated as highland, with the Dutch equivalent being hoogeland. In the thirteenth century and again in 1525, a number of residents fled from Hocherland to avoid the anger of the Teutonic Knights and settled in the Netherlands. These emigrants became known as van Hoogeland, or, from Hoogeland. There was also a village in the province of Utrecht, Holland that was called Hoogland.

From 1638 to 1658, four men with the Hoogland surname emigrated to New Netherlands: Cornelis Dircksen Hoochlandt of Amsterdam in 1638; Christoffel Hooglandt of Haarlem in 1655; Dirck Jansen Hoogland from Maerseveen in 1657; Cornelis Andrieszen Hoogland of Hague in 1658. Whether any of the four were related is unknown. It is believed that Cornelis Andrieszen Hoogland returned to Holland in 1664. Joseph Hoagland probably descends from the line of Dirck Jansen Hoogland from Maerseveen.

The ancestry of the Jacobus Hoagland who died in Frederick County, Virginia before October 12, 1759 has long been a mystery, as has the ancestry of the various Hoagland families who were prominent in the struggles with the native Americans on the frontiers of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio in the years prior to, during, and shortly after the Revolutionary War. As one author has noted, "Numerous Hoaglands, Hooglands, Hoglans and Hogelands have been found in West Virginia and Southern Ohio who cannot be directly linked to any of the three Hoagland Families [who originally emigrated to the United States]. Some researchers feel that they are descended from Dirck Jansen Hoogland; however there is at this writing not enough proof for the linkage." SOURCE: George Williams Hoagland, Dirk Jansen Hoogland Family History 1657-1976 (Genie Repros: Cleveland, Ohio 1976) at page vii. The purpose of this memorandum is to offer new and corroborative proofs that Jacobus Hoagland was the son of Jan Dirksen Hoogland and the grandson of Dirck Jansen Hoogland.

Centralia - Columbia County, Pennsylvania

The borough of Centralia is located in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Centralia was founded in 1860, but it was initially known as Bull's Head, named after a tavern in the borough. Johnathan Faust opened Bull's Head Tavern in 1841 in what was then Roaring Creek Township. In 1854, Alexander W. Rea, a civil and mining engineer for the Locust Mountain Coal and Iron Company, moved to the site and laid out streets and lots for development. The town was known as Centreville until 1865, when the post office was established and the name was changed to Centralia. Centralia was incorporated as a borough in 1866. The anthracite coal industry was the principal employer in the community. Coal mining continued in Centralia until the 1960s, when most of the companies went out of business. Bootleg mining continued until 1982. Strip and open-pit mining is still active in the area, and there is an underground mine employing about 40 employees three miles to the west.

No one knows exactly how it started, but a coal vein has been burning under the Pennsylvania mining town of Centralia since 1961. Some trace it back to careless trash incineration in an open pit mine igniting a coal vein. The fire crawled, insidiously, along coal-rich deposits far from the miner's pick, venting hot and poisonous gases up into town, through the basements of homes and businesses.

With dawning horror, residents came to realize that the fire was not going to be extinguished, or ever burn itself out -- at least not until all the interconnected coal veins in eastern Pennsylvania were spent in some epic, meatless barbecue. As the underground fire worked its way under rows of homes and businesses, the threat of fires, asphyxiation, carbon monoxide poisoning, and long-term health impact became a daily concern.

The government eventually stepped in, and Centralia joined an elite club of communities, including Love Canal and Times Beach. Declared municipalis non grata, Centralia was slowly abandoned as houses were demolished or burned, and citizens relocated.

1. Jonathan Jay Hogeland born < 1826

In 1860 Jonathan Hoagland opened the first store opposite the "Bull's Head Tavern".  By 1862, he was appointed the postmaster. The community was then known as Centerville. When the post office was applied for in the name of Centerville, another town by that name already existed in Pennsylvania. The name of Centralia was suggested by a Mr. Rae and was then accepted by the postal service as the name of the post office and the town. The incorporation came about in 1866 when the Borough of Centralia was officially chartered. The first Mayor was James Dyke. The title at that time was actually Chief Burgess rather than Mayor.

Chehalis, Lewis County, Washington

Lewis County, Washington is located in southwestern Washington State 90 miles south of Seattle, WA, 50 miles south of Tacoma, WA, 30 miles south of Olympia, WA, the State capital, and 80 miles north of Portland, OR. Lewis County's largest city is Centralia. The county seat is the City of Chehalis. Centralia and Chehalis are known as the twin cities.

Chehalis, which has been the Lewis County seat since 1872, was founded in 1852 by Stuart Schuyler Saunders. Originally called Saundersville, the city became Chehalis in 1859. Chehalis got its start as an industrial city very early on, with logging, sawmills, and the farming of grain, hay, hops and fruit serving as the major commodities. Industry remains a mainstay of modern-day Chehalis. The thriving industrial park is home to nearly 30 businesses at this time, and is still growing.

Methodism was introduced into Centralia in January of 1863, and was therefore the first denomination represented in the town. Morris Lewis was ap- pointed leader of a class of eight by Reverend W. M. Showalter, who was then pastor at Ashland. Two years later Reverend N. W. Guire, from the same place, organized the Methodist Episcopal appointment of Centralia, formed class, and appointed William M. Hoagland, leader.
