Summers

SUMMERS: This ancient surname derives from the Old French "somier" meaning a "sumpter", a term describing one who drove pack horses or mules. The name is first recorded in Scotland towards the end of the 12th Century (see below), but in fact is equally at home in England, being an introduction by the Norman Invaders after 1066. The name in its many forms is widespread throughout the United Kingdom and these spellings include Symmers, Symers, Simmers, and Somers as well as Sumer, Sumers, Sunter, Sumpter and Summers. Amongst the early recordings of the name William Le Sumeter in the Assize Rolls of Worcester for 1221, whilst in 1327 William Somyr was granted an annual rent for life by King David 11 of Scotland. Other examples include Adam Sumer of Essex, in 1223, with William Somer appearing in the Worcestershire Pipe Rolls of 1275, and John Somerys in the 1377 Subsidy Rolls of Somerset. The Bermuda Islands were originally called 'The Somer Islands' after Sir George Somer. Sir George also held a special license from King James 1 of England and V1 of Scotland (1867 - 1625) to (quote) 'make habitation anbd plantation of people in that part of America called Virginea'. John Sumers of St Johns parish, Barbados, was an early land owner on that island. His servant was John Vinicott, a 'Monmouth' rebel, sentenced to ten years exile by the dreaded Judge Jefferies in 1685. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Sumer (witnessed a grant to Soltre Hospital), which was dated circa 1180, in "Charters of the Hospital of Soltre", Edinburgh, Scotland, during the reign of King William "The Lion" of Scotland, 1165 - 1214. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

**Per Doris Matney Weatherly**

The Summers Family is said to be of Flemish origin and to have been 1st known in England at the time of the Reformation. Property was granted to them at a former religious seat a short distance from Worcester and this became the family seat. Here they resided and here they entertained Queen Elizabeth in her progress through Worcestershire in 1585. Many of the members of this family became men of distinction and renown. One branch of the family moved to Dorsetshire, England and it is from this branch that the Virginian family is descended. The name is variously spelled Somers, Sommers, Sumers, and Summers but the Virginians of this stock have in general used the form Summers.

History

Stafford County was established by the British colonial government of Virginia in 1664 from territory that was previously part of Westmoreland County, Arlington County, the City of Alexandria, Fairfax County, and Prince William County, and thusly encompassed the majority of what is now considered Northern Virginia. The county is named for Staffordshire, England.

Pocahontas, the Indian princess, was kidnapped at Marlborough Point in the eastern part of the county and taken to a secondary English settlement known as Henricus (or Henrico Town). While there, she converted to Christianity and married an English settler named John Rolfe in April 1614.

George Washington spent much of his childhood in the lower part of the county on his family's home, Ferry Farm, along the Rappahannock River across from the city of Fredericksburg. It was during this time that George supposedly cut down the legendary cherry tree. Colonial Forge High School was built on a tract of land owned by his father, Augustine Washington.

History

Settlement of the area began around 1640 with the county being officially formed in 1669 from a part of Lancaster County. The county's only incorporated town, Urbanna, was established in 1680 serving initially as a port for shipping agricultural products and later as the county's commercial and governmental center.

Montgomery County Kentucky

History

Montgomery County, named for General Richard Montgomery, was formed from Clark County in 1797. It is located on the eastern edge of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The current county seat, Mount Sterling, was established in 1793 as "Little Mountain Town" but the surveyor changed the name to Sterling. At one time there was a large Indian mound in the area -- the "little mountain".

Fires in 1851 and 1863 destroyed many records, including marriage records and circuit court records. County clerk records were in a different location and were saved. Some marriage records have been reconstructed based on other records.

Population: 19,561 (1990)

County seat: Mount Sterling

Elevation: 707 to 1447 feet above sea level

Notes for JOHN Summers: John was named in the "Summers Family Ledger" as a son of George, but I am unsure where he fits, because in "Annals of Platte Co MO", pg 248-50, his father lived to 114, and he had a brother named Samuel. He was a Rev. War Soldier- listed his children in his pension application . He enlisted March 1781 in Frederick Co VA to serve in the War. Moved from Fairfax Co VA t o KY in 1789. Lived in Bourbon, Montgomery, Jessamine and Fleming Counties. Moved to Platte Co MO after 1820 (or his children did??).

Notes for AGNES BELL:
Eleanor Brice and husband Henry gave a deposition. Eleanor was age 68 in 1846, and said she was a cousin to Agnes. Eleanor's father, Benjamin Threlkeld, brought Agnes to live with them when her mother died. They resided in Frederick Co VA. Agnes lived with them until she married John Summers. Their first child was born in the Threlkeld home. The Threlkelds moved from VA to KY in 1792. The Summers had moved earlier, living in another county, before moving to Fleming County in 1795, when Henry Bice met them. This deposition was in John's pension appl .

Descendants of John B. Summers

From Wilma Summers, a photocopy of a biography by ? from an unknown book:
Mason Summers was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky, February 6, 1801. His paternal grandfather and parents moved from Virginia to Kentucky in 1791. His father, John Summers, volunteered in the patriot army at the age of sixteen, and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. His grandfather died, in Kentucky, at the advanced age of one hundred and nineteen years. At the age of one hundred and ten years, he voted at an election in Mount Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky. Mason was the eighth of a family of twelve children, seven sons and five daughters. The two eldest were born in Virginia; the others in Kentucky. He left May's Lick, Mason County, his home in Kentucky, on the 8th of September, 1836, and reached Clay County, Missouri, October 15, following. He continued to reside there till the spring of 1849, when he moved to a locality in Clinton County, within two and a half miles of what is now the town of Lathrop, where he owned a farm of 1,120 acres. He continued to farm there, on a large scale, for the period of seven years. In 1856, he moved to Hainesville, in Jackson Township, where, in partnership with James P. Gee [this is his daughter Agnes' father-in-law], he opened the largest stock of goods ever offered for sale in the place. They continued to operate till the civil war compelled them to suspend and wrecked their fortunes. In the spring of 1875, he moved to Lathrop, where he has since continued to reside. December 4, 1823, he was married to Miss Maria Bell, a daughter of Daniel Bell of Virginia. They had ten children, four sons and six daughters. Of these (in 1881) two sons, James Mason and John T., and two daughters, Mrs. Matilda Peters and Laura Summers, survive. One son, Aaron M. Summers, a youth of rare gifts of intellect, was graduated in Bethany College with high honors in the class of 1857, and died shortly after from the effects of intense mental application. In 1828, Mr. Summers united with the Baptist Church at May's Lick, Kentucky. He was among the earliest to unite with the Christian Church, of which he has ever since continued to be an active and zealous member, and a prominent and liberal supporter. In his generation one of the wealthiest men in this section of country, in the closing days of his advanced age he bears the reverses of fortune with a cheerful resignation

H. H. FUNK DEAD----Old Resident of Muscatine Island Passed Away Last Night.----OVER EIGHTY YEARS OLD.-----Is Survived by Five Daughters and One Son----Was Ill But Few Days---Funeral Arrangements Have Not Yet Been Made.-----On Sunday evening at his home on Muscatine Island, occurred the death of Harbin H. Funk. He was born in Harrison county, Indiana, on March 19th, 1826, and was therefore 80 years and one month old. He was the youngest of a family of three children born to Abraham and Elizabeth (Summers) Funk, the father a native of Virginia and the mother of Kentucky. They settled in Indiana in 1808, and there the father, who had been a soldier of the war of 1812 died in 1857. The mother afterwards settled in Mercer county, Illinois, where she died in 1885. The son Harbin was united in marriage with Miss Martha Applegate, of Indiana. They moved to Mercer county, Illinois, in 1855 and two years later removed to their home on Muscatine Island, where the death of the wife occurred in 1877. The husband was remarried in 1885 to Mrs. Regina (Bodman) Walton. Mr. Funk is survived by his wife, five daughters and one son, they being Adiline, wife of Wm. Richards; Belle, wife of Philip DeCamp; Eunice, wife of R. T. Hummel, and Charles Funk, all of Muscatine Island; Nettie, wife of George Hummel, of Red Cloud, Nebraska, and Miss Julia Funk, of Muscatine, Iowa. Mr. Funk was a plain man of rugged character. He avoided all shams in life, seeking earnestly after truth and believing in a square deal. He was a great temperance advocate, and helped everything for public good. He was passionately fond of planting trees and helped to plant and care for those now growing in Hopewell school yard and in the Island cemetery. He was a reader of books and newspapers for a portion of his life. He was not a believer in religion, but becoming convinced of its value he became an earnest student of the bible. He never united with the church but often expressed willingness to do so. He leaves behind him the priceless inheritance of a good name to become the heritage of his children, his many grand and great grand children. Mr. Funk had been enjoying his usual good health until the afternoon of Friday, April 14, when he was taken with an attack of stomach trouble. His attending physician did not consider his condition alarming but the end came unexpectedly Sunday night, April 15, when he passed quietly and easily into the great beyond at 9 p.m. It was a beautiful ending of a long and useful life coming at the close of the Easter tide.

Summers Family Cemetery
Located 50 ft. east of the intersection of Deming Ave. and Rte. 613, Lincolnia, Va.

This cemetery contains nine formal monuments and numerous footstones that mark the graves of 26 people. Depressions and other evidence suggests the presence of additional unmarked burials. An 82' x 90' fence surrounds the burials. A 10' x 12' wrought iron fence encloses markers 7 and 9 and a 20' x 25' iron fence surrounds marker 10. The Fairfax County Park Authority cleaned the cemetery, erected the outer fence, and built the trail next to the site in 1989. They now maintain the cemetery, which is clean and well maintained.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

John Summers
Born 1687 Died 1790

It has been a difficult matter to procure much authentic information reflating to the period in the history of Fairfax county between its first settlement and the date of its formation in 1742. The oldest resident of whom we have any record was Mr. John Summers, whose long life began in 1687 (just 220 years ago) and closed in 1790. He died at the old family homestead, "Summers Grove," near Ananndale, aged 103 years, and his tombstone can still be seen in the family burying ground at that place.

Some of his descendents, to whom we shall allude in future articles, were men of great distinction, and ability, who reflected honor upon their native county. The Summers family was of Flemish origin and was known in England at the time of the Reformation, when property was granted them a short distance from the city of Worcester. This became their family seat, and here they received and entertained Queen Elizabeth in 1585. The bed in which she slept and the cup from which she drank were preserved by them as precious relics for many generations and among its members were men of distinction and renown. Sir George Summers, Lord High Admiral, and Lord John Summers, Lord High Chancellor of England and Keeper of the Privy Seal to William III belonged to the family. The Summers family of Fairfax descended from Sir George Summers, who commanded the "Sea Venture," one of the vessels which brought over the Jamestown colony in 1607, and Col. Louis Summers commanded the first body of English soldiers sent over for the protection of the little body of settlers.

From a sketch written by Judge Lewis Summers, (a great grandson of John) between the years 1835 and 1840, we learn that John Summers, the son of an English Protestant family, was born in Maryland in 1687. He came to Virginia when quite a young mand and built a cabin on the Potomac where the city of Alexandria now stands. The land was then vacant, appropriations by grant not having extended far from the bay and the mouths of the principal rivers. The country between the present site of Alexandria and the Blue Ridge was then the hunting ground of the Indians, abounding with deer, bear, wolves, &c., and wild turkeys and other game.

John Summers' early years were spent in hunting, but as immigrants began to flock in the usual struggles commenced between the settlers and the aborigines for the occupancy of the country, and Mr. Summers was an active leader and pioneer of the whites in the various campaigns undertaken for the removal of the Indians west of the Blue Ridge. When the country began to receive some population he married a Mrs. Blake, by whom he had five sons and five daughters.

As the culture of tobacco began to spread to this quarter of the colony he built and owned several tobacco houses. Hunting continued to be a favorite employment, and in his latter days took pleasure in regaling his friends with anecdotes of the chase and of his Indian campaigns and other incidents connected with his early life.
He seems to have been like Daniel Boone, regardless of the acquisition of land, thinking the taxes, quit-rents, &c., more burdensome than the land would be beneficial, which he illustrated by the refusal of a deed from the patentee for the land on which Alexandria now stands and on which he resided, in exchange for his favorite rifle. In after years he was much engaged by locators and surveyors in pointing out the best pieces of vacant lands and in conducting them through the forest districts with which he was familiar, and was at length prevailed upon by his friend, Capt. West, the surveyor of the county, to locate large tract for each of his sons, containing from four to six hundred acres, but no persuasion could induce him to cur the expense and trouble of securing land for his daughters.

The first concentration of the trade was at the Hunting Creek tobacco warehouse, at the head of the tide, where the old Colchester road crossed the creek. In 1748 an act was passed for laying off a town at Hunting Creek Warehouse, but the site now occupyed by Alexandria being found more eligible, the town wa located there and called Belle Haven. It was afterwards changed, in compliment to the family of Alexanders who owned the surrounding lands, to Alexandria, and the legislature recognized the name in 1762. John Summers lived to see Alexandria become a place of considerable commercial importance and frequently adverted to his cabin being the first building ever erected there, and that the first frame house ever put up on the place was prepared and framed on his land above the "Trough Hill," and hauled to the site which it was to occupy.

He was a man of very robust constitution, broad in the chest, powerful in limb, and about 5 feet 10 inches in height. He was too far advanced in years to take part in the Revolutionary war, but many of his descendants were in the army, some as officers, others in the ranks. He retained his faculties and strenght in remarkable degree, and was appealed to on all questions of corners and boundaries of the early surveys. He exercised freely on foot until within about a year of his death when from a fall he dislocated his hip, and was afterwards confined to his bed, where the recital of the litany and the prayers of the church occupied his time when alone.

His last moments were calm and unclouded, and on the evening of his death he had supped as usual and was heard humming a Psalm and resiting the Evening Prayers. A few moments after it was discovered that his spirit had taken its flight to the bosom of his God.

In 1748 John Summers was recorded among the freeholders of Fairfax as voting for Major Laurence Washington and Col. Colville for the House of Burgesses. July 16, 1765, he and his five sons voted for George Washington and John West for the same office, and again at a general election December 1, 1768, the same gentlemen were voted for and the same number of the Summers family supported them. Within the last ten years of his life he was accustomed to walk six to eight miles in a day attended by a great grandson, Lewis Summers, afterwards a very distinguished judge, of whom we shall speak in a future article. His descendants intermarried with the Millans, Foxes, and other well known families of the country.

Think of the great span of this man's life---from 1687 to 1790!-commencing at a time when Fairfax county was practically a wilderness, inhabited by Indians and wild animals, and closing many years after the Revolutionary war, for which Fairfax furnished the leader who became the first President of the great republic. The following notice of his death is from the 8th Volumn of the American Museum, published in Philadelphia in 1790:

Died-Virginia, near Alexandria, Mr. John Summers, aged 103 years. He had left descendants of four generations, amounting to four hundred. There is in Omaha, Neb. a clock which was once the property of John Summers. It is more than 200 years old and is still doing faithful duty. It has descended to the oldest son of each succeeding generation and is now in the possession of Dr. John Edward Summers, Jr., professor of Surgery in the State University of Nebraska, who, of course, prizes it very highly.

When the county of Loudoun was settled, Francis, a brother of John and about twenty years younger, moved to that county, and married a Mrs. Lane, by whom he had one son and one daughter. The son entered the Revolutionary army and left it at the end of the war a Lieut. Colonel. Col. Summers, of Loudoun, was highly respected and frequently represented his county in the legislature. Smith, the first historian of Virginia spells the name of the same individual, Somers, Sommers, and Summers in different parts of his work. Among the papers of Mr. John Summers his name was found spelled in those three different ways, and many of his descendants use the "o" instead of the "u," but the grants issued to him for land contained his name as most generally spelled by his descendants-Summers.

March 21-27, 1979
Lincolnia Hills roundup
By Nancy Floyd

It's no news to the homeowner behind his bucking lawnmower that LH has roots. But perhaps not everyone knows we have the kind of roots Jim McEvoy of Chambliss recently uncovered.
Curious about the new homes being built off Lincolnia Road between Chambliss and Barnum and having read a book on our area's history, "Beginning at White Oak," Jim went exploring and discovered a small, vine-entangled cemetery up there.
Buried in this cemetery is John Summers who, according to Jim's research, was the original owner of all the land that is now Lincolnia Hills. Jim found maps showing John Summers also owned the surrounding area including Indian Run and Holmes Run in partnership with George Harrison.
Bulldozers recently cleared the area around the little gray house on Lincolnia Road and next to the cemetery. The boundary markers are visible from Morgan Street in the backyards of homes on the south side. The new development is "Ashley," a community of ten homes, built by C. Kirk Reilly and Associates and is advertised as "elegant new 4 bedroom homes on large homesites in a wooded cul-de-sac." They start at $120,000.
Jim, who's a librarian at the Library of Congress, says he's not a cemetery freak, but he was concerned about whether the company would tear down the cemetery. It appears it won't, but just in case, Jim took a picture of John Summer's headstone which says he "departed this life the 4th of December, 1790, at age 102."
John Summers was a well known figure in those days, according to a "List of Northern Neck Grants" at the county library. The records of Fairfax County include many depositions made by John Summers (Sommers, Symmers) in land disputes which were decided by the court. He told the court that in old times he used to be a good deal with the surveyors and attended many surveys in the neighborhood of Hunting Creek. When he was ninety-eight he was still giving depositions. When he was ninety-two he told how he moved from Dogue Neck to a spot near present Christ Church in 1715.
The book states:
"In 1723 John Summers moved to the 'forest' near present-day Bailey's Crossroads and in 1773 he moved further into the 'forest' to his son's house. Summers died in 1790, aged 102, and is buried at the corner of Beauregard and Burnum off Route 236. In 1716 he was a tenant to John West, as was Gabriel Adams, and he stated that their houses and two tabacco houses were the only houses on one hundred acres of land which was later part of Alexandria."
In addition to John Summers, his wife Jane who died in 1814 at the age of 79, and numerous family members, the follwing early settlers' monuments are there: Thomas Cowling, Jan. 1797-April 1864; his wife Mary C., March 1796-August 1877; Stephen G. Cowling, August 18-June 1911; his wife Jane, 1887, and Edward W. Crump, 1819-1900.
On the monument to the Duty family are the names of several children: Charles 1894-1895; John, 1898-1900; Ira, 1902-1902; Jannet F., 1906-1906; Emory, 187-1888; and Blanche, 1889-90. The parents were Charles, 1860-1934 and Ida, 1863-1918. Jim says he read that there was a small pox epidemic about that time.
"Beginning at White Oak" is available in the lobby of the Massey Branch of the Fairfax County library for $5.00. The number to call is 691-2974.

"Old" John Summers ~1706 - ~1825

"Old" John Summers

Death:      ~1825 at a very old age of 119

1820      United States Federal Census : Delaware County, Indiana: census taker made a notation:
"This man is 114 years old never lost sight or hearing
has upward of four hundred descendants and

                    Birth: 1706
~1825:   John Summers died in Kentucky at the advanced age of one hundred and nineteen years.
At the age of one hundred and ten years, he voted at an election in Mount Sterling,
              Montgomery County, Kentucky.

Sarah Summers (Harper) whose father lived to the age of 112.
When he was 110 he walked 5 miles to vote."
1844      There was also an article written in the Kentucky Gazette about
"Methusalah John's 112th birthday party held at Mt Sterling.
The article states that John had 24 children, 14 of them living.
1921      article written about "Methulsa John".
A John Summers that had lived to be 120 years old and died in Delaware Co, IN!

Two of his sons, Mason & Jesse stated in the publication "The Annals of Platte Co, Missouri" that their grandfather lived to be 119 years, taught school for 52 years, and that he was born 13 Jul 1705.

Sept 4 1786. John Thorn is listed as Executor of Will of his mother SARAH THORN-WILSON in 1786,Prince William Co Va. In the Will it lists other children - ELIJAH MUSE, GEORGE CARTER and RICHARD CARTER, ELIZABETH SUMMERS, BARBARA PEAK, JEMIMAH WILLIAMS, FRANCES COBEL(believe to be FRANCES CARTER-COCKRELL or COTTRELL).

Message Board Post:
Would "Old" John Summers, who lived to be at least 114 years old, who was born July 12, 1706 (as recorded in Kentucky Gazette, info posted on this board) and died probably in Morgan County, Indiana be one of the children of John Summers born 1686 you are mentioning in your post? This John Summers is shown on the Delaware County, Indiana 1820 census, and the census taker made a notation: "This man is 114 years old never lost sight or hearing has upward of four hundred descendants and has had two wives by each has ten children"

I believe this "Old" John Summers born 1706 to be the father of John Summers born 1764 in Prince William County, Va. who married Agnes Bell. His grandchildren made statements that their grandfather lived to be 114-119 years old (depending on which account you read). How many John Summers were there that lived to be this old?

Both of these John Summers men lived at one time in Montgomery County, Ky. and I believe one of them was the Elder of Lulbegrud Baptist Church which was formed in Clark County, Kentucky in 1793 (later Montgomery Co.) Also one of them I believe was the man my ancestor Edward Williams sold land to in Clark County in 1794.

I am trying to connect the John Summers born 1706 to the Chopawamsic Baptist Church Stafford County, Va. in 1767. On the list of members is whom I believe to be my ancestor Edward Williams and wife Jemimah Williams and also shown is a John Summers and an Elizabeth Summers who joined the same day. I believe the John Summers listed there at Chopawamsic Baptist Church to be the husband of Elizabeth Carter Summers, daughter of a Sarah Muse Carter Thorn Wilson (she was either born a Muse or married a Muse first time). Other son-in-laws of Sarah's are there and also another daughter, plus extended family members of one son-in-law.

Jay,

Please let me know if you ever run into the name of Henry Summers, born in England in the 1640s. and settled first in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut.

The CT state archives suggests that he was born in Devonshire, England, but this is not based on fact.

He is apparently not related to an earlier Henry Summers who settled in Woburn, Massachusetts.  There was confusion about this for a long time because this earlier Henry had a son, Henry, but I have been able to establish that that Henry lived out his life in Massachusetts.

Some time in the early 18th century my particular branch of the family changed the spelling to Somers.  My great-great grandfather established the Somers Copper Company in Waterbury which existed until the 1960s when it was bought our by Anaconda.  I mention that because many people sometimes are familiar with that.

Thank you. I would appreciate your keeping a look out for us.

Regards,

Francis Summers born 1702 and the will of John Summers.

I am a direct descendant of Francis's son George Summers married to Susannah Moore. I am trying to do our family tree. Since you noted that Francis could be a "step son" of John's via the will and the statement "son in law" how can I feel confident our family are even Summer's? Have you found anything indicating who the parents of Francis were via a baptism record or another source? Is the will of John Summers enough to even have  Francis listed as a son? I just want to be as accurate as possible. Was it common for a "step" son to take the name of his step father back then? Help!

Great website!

Subject: Johann Jehu Summers (Somers)

I am a Summers researcher, and was pleased to find your site.

I descend from Johann Jehu Summers who married Joannah Davis.

Family legend places Jehu in the home of his "Uncle" John and wife Agnes Bell, in Ky for the birth of William Belle Summers, one of his sons in 1811.

It was reported William B. was born in Fleming Co. Ky.

Did you find a birth record for William Belle Summers when you were doing Fleming Co., Ky research perchance.

The father of Jehu was Pvt. Paul Harrison Summers of Bath Co., Va. who was also at the Yorktown siege along with John in your history.  When it was reported that Jehu had gone to the home of his uncle John Summers in Fleming Co., Ky. I would think it would have been a brother to his father Paul Harrison Summers ?

Any guidance you may offer will be appreciated.

I am 84 and have been at the family history business for over 60 years,

Margaret Louise Drody Thompson

My Summer- Davis roots go into the Pierson lineage of Nicholas and Clay Co., now WV.

Hi Jay, You have done a remarkable job on your family web page. My Funk line is through William Funk, son of Jacob and Williams second wife, Elizabeth Summers. My questions is who is the father of Elizabeth. The marriage records report Elizabeth as the daughter of Michael. It is only an abstract done by Beanblossom and I haven’t seen the original to know if there is an error. What is your source for saying John Summers is the father? I have a hunch if Michael is the father, he is a brother to John, but I have little to do on.

My line is additionally through William’s son Silas and his son Alva.

Have you found a will for William Funk and also John or Michael Summers?

I would be happy to give you my info on my line if you are branching out that far.

Sincerely,

Joan Schacht
